Honda’s 2018 Gold Wing Tour Is Passenger Approved

Given the passenger seat on most of the bikes I bring home, it’s usually pretty hard to convince my significant other to go for an all day ride, especially if it’s cold out. After one look at the lounge like chair on the new Gold Wing Tour, however, my wife Loren was actually excited for our test ride in chilly central Texas, and she found the controls for her heated seat before I’d even fired up the King Wing’s flat six. For more than four decades now the Gold Wing has been one of the most comfortable places to spend time on two wheels, and for 2018 it gets even better.

It starts, as you might expect, with where you park your butt. The pleated and bolstered captain’s chairs of the previous generation are gone, but after riding a 2017 model and a 2018 back to back we didn’t miss them, and we certainly don’t miss them looking like grandpa’s recliner. I prefer the softer foam of the new seat, and the way the narrower forward portion makes it easier to put your feet down at stops. There’s also a revised riding position that’s a little less awkwardly upright. Loren, petite as she is, thought the previous gen seat was just too big, voting the 2018 setup best because it left less of a gap between me and her. She voiced the same sentiment when we rode BMW’s K1600GTL and R1200RT, preferring the more compact layout of the RT since it made her feel more secure.

Improvements continue with the aerodynamics and the ease with which you can adjust airflow on the new bike. You might think that the 2018 Wing’s smaller windscreen and narrower fairing wouldn’t block the wind as well as before, but you’d be wrong. 2006 cbr600rr fairings Through the miracle of wind tunnel testing the new bike actually offers smoother currents around the rider and passenger. Plus, there’s now a rocker switch that lets you dial in the windscreen height without having to unlock latches and physically push and pull on the shield like you had to in years past. That’s a big convenience. Loren and I noticed our Shoei Neotecs getting batted around less on the new model no matter what position the screen was in, and I liked the fact that at full extension you actually look through the windscreen on the ’18, not across the top of it.

Another difference between the two models is the ride quality. Big bikes tend to soak up bumps pretty well anyway, but the Honda really feels like it’s floating down the road. The vigorous up and down motion of the tie rod ends on the new double wishbone front end, besides bouncing enough to be distracting, make it clear the suspension is very busy even if doesn’t feel that way at the grips. And while one rider I spoke to thought the new front end setup felt vague, I was impressed with how light and precise the steering was and surprised by how far over you could bank the big bike before hard parts began to drag. It’s not as sporty as BMW’s K1600GTL and the electronically adjustable suspension (rear preload only) doesn’t hold a candle to the German D ESA semi active suspension, but the Gold Wing is still an agile land yacht that’ll eat up corners.

You want power as smooth as a kitten’s ear? Get yourself a six cylinder. Thrust from the completely reworked 1,833cc flat six is indistinguishable from years past the Wing still surges forward on a never ending flow of smooth, strong torque. Acceleration in the first three gears will tickle your guts and make your passenger giggle, but roll on performance in the upper ratios is fairly relaxed. We hopped on a seven speed DCT equipped bike for a short stint and the automatic shifting technology is a great fit for the big tourer, but prepare to have your friend’s clown you for riding the world’s biggest scooter. Loren liked how seamlessly the transmission upshifted, 2007 yamaha r6 fairing but we were both frustrated by the inconsistent timing and occasionally rough action of downshifts. On the manual trans bike now a conventional six speed downshifts are smoothed by a new slipper clutch. Both models have a nifty reverse mode to help you maneuver in parking lots, and the DCT even gets a pushbutton “walking speed” forward feature. Dorky as you may look while dog paddling the bike, the walking modes are a pretty handy thing to have when your all in weight is well over 1,000 pounds.

Honda’s legendary flat six is all new for 2018. Updates include a revised bore and stroke and new, slimmer cylinders that help reduce the engine’s length by more than an inch. Compression is up from 9.8:1 to 10.5:1 and there are now four valves per cylinder (up from two), actuated via a Unicam design as on Honda’s motocrossers. There’s an extra gear in the transmission, a slipper clutch for smoother downshifts, plus a new combined alternator and starter unit that saves more than 5 pounds. Anti friction coatings on the piston skirts and other drag reducing efforts help improve efficiency by 20 percent, says Honda.

The brakes (now radially mounted) are noticeably stronger and more precise, and the throttle response (now ride by wire) is more refined as well as adjustable via four ride modes. The whole dash and control interface has been redesigned (thank God!), eliminating the 700 or so buttons by combining functions into a fairly intuitive menu system displayed on the new 7 inch TFT dash. The minor improvements in comfort and refinement are all well and good, but it’s that new sleek dash that makes the biggest difference in the bike’s overall sense of modernity.

Honda’s mandate to slim down and streamline the various Gold Wing models has resulted in lighter (by a claimed 70 or so pounds, 2008 gsxr 600 fairings depending on the trim level) machines, but it means there’s one less gallon of gas under the seat and a 40 liter reduction in luggage space. As far as I can tell, those are really the only two downsides to the new bike. There’s not much you can do about the smaller side cases except pack lighter, but Honda claims the new engine is 20 percent more efficient and that overall range is the same as before (about 250 miles). During our relaxed pace ride, however, we averaged 38.4 mpg, only 2 mpg up on the last Gold Wing we tested. Woops. With those numbers you’re good for about 200 miles until empty.

Compared to previous base G Wing the new Gold Wing Tour is $2,000 more at $26,700, but you’re getting a lot of improvements for the money. Even so, if you take a look at this price comparison of luxury touring models, the Tour is priced higher than the lighter, more sophisticated, and more powerful BMW K1600GTL. Once you’re this deep into this narrow niche of motorcycling, however, there’s likely a lot more to your choice in bikes than just the specifications and a few thousand dollars. So if a weekend getaway is what you’re after or even if you want to cruise across the country you can’t go wrong with the new Gold Wing, especially if you want your significant other to join you for the ride. custom fairing

” Dans une priode d’interrogations et d’incertitudes comme celle que nous traversons, nous devons nous rappeler qui nous sommes. La France n’est pas un pays comme les autres. Le sens des injustices y est plus vif qu’ailleurs. L’exigence d’entraide et de solidarit plus forte. Chez nous, ceux qui travaillent financent les pensions des retraits. Chez nous, un grand nombre de citoyens paie un impt sur le revenu, parfois lourd, qui rduit les ingalits. Chez nous, l’ducation, la sant, la scurit, la justice sont accessibles tous indpendamment de la situation et de la fortune.

Les alas de la vie, comme le chmage, peuvent tre surmonts, grce l’effort partag par tous. C’est pourquoi la France est, de toutes les nations, une des plus fraternelles et des plus galitaires. C’est aussi une des plus libres, puisque chacun est protg dans ses droits et dans sa libert d’opinion, de conscience, de croyance ou de philosophie. Et chaque citoyen a le droit de choisir celles et ceux qui porteront sa voix dans la conduite du pays, dans la conception des lois, dans les grandes dcisions prendre. Chacun partage le destin des autres et chacun est appel dcider du destin de tous: c’est tout cela, la nation franaise. Comment ne pas prouver la fiert d’tre Franais ? Je sais, bien sr, que certains d’entre nous sont aujourd’hui insatisfaits ou en colre. Parce que les impts sont pour eux trop levs, les services publics trop loigns, parce que les salaires sont trop faibles pour que certains puissent vivre dignement du fruit de leur travail, parce que notre pays n’offre pas les mmes chances de russir selon le lieu ou la famille d’o l’on vient. Tous voudraient un pays plus prospre et une socit plus juste. Cette impatience, je la partage.

La socit que nous voulons est une socit dans laquelle pour russir on ne devrait pas avoir besoin de relations ou de fortune, mais d’effort et de travail. En France, mais aussi en Europe et dans le monde, non seulement une grande inquitude, mais aussi un grand trouble ont gagn les esprits. Il nous faut y rpondre par des ides claires. Mais il y a pour cela une condition: n’accepter aucune forme de violence. Je n’accepte pas, et n’ai pas le droit d’accepter la pression et l’insulte, par exemple sur les lus du peuple, je n’accepte pas et n’ai pas le droit d’accepter la mise en accusation gnrale, par exemple des mdias, des journalistes, des institutions et des fonctionnaires. Si tout le monde agresse tout le monde, la socit se dfait! Afin que les esprances dominent les peurs, il est ncessaire et lgitime que nous nous reposions ensemble les grandes questions de notre avenir. C’est pourquoi j’ai propos et je lance aujourd’hui un grand dbat national qui se droulera jusqu’au 15 mars prochain. Depuis quelques semaines, de nombreux maires ont ouvert leurs mairies pour que vous puissiez y exprimer vos attentes. J’ai eu de nombreux retours que j’ai pu prendre en compte. Nous allons dsormais entrer dans une phase plus ample et vous pourrez participer des dbats prs de chez vous ou vous exprimer sur internet pour faire valoir vos propositions et vos ides.

Dans l’Hexagone, outre mer et auprs des Franais rsidant l’tranger. Dans les villages, les bourgs, les quartiers, l’initiative des maires, des lus, des responsables associatifs, ou de simples citoyens Dans les assembles parlementaires comme rgionales ou dpartementales. Les maires auront un rle essentiel car ils sont vos lus et donc l’intermdiaire lgitime de l’expression des citoyens. Pour moi, il n’y a pas de questions interdites. Nous ne serons pas d’accord sur tout, c’est normal, c’est la dmocratie. Mais au moins montrerons nous que nous sommes un peuple qui n’a pas peur de parler, d’changer, de dbattre. Et peut tre dcouvrirons nous que nous pouvons tomber d’accord, majoritairement, au del de nos prfrences, plus souvent qu’on ne le croit.

” La lutte contre le chmage doit tre notre priorit”

Je n’ai pas oubli que j’ai t lu sur un projet, sur de grandes orientations auxquelles je demeure fidle. Je pense toujours qu’il faut rendre la France sa prosprit pour qu’elle puisse tre gnreuse, car l’un va avec l’autre. Je pense toujours que la lutte contre le chmage doit tre notre grande priorit, et que l’emploi se cre avant tout dans les entreprises, qu’il faut donc leur donner les moyens de se dvelopper. Je pense toujours qu’il faut rebtir une cole de la confiance, un systme social rnov pour mieux protger les Franais et rduire les ingalits la racine. Je pense toujours que l’puisement des ressources naturelles et le drglement climatique nous obligent repenser notre modle de dveloppement. Nous devons inventer un projet productif, nike presto noir social, ducatif, environnemental et europen nouveau, plus juste et plus efficace. Sur ces grandes orientations, ma dtermination n’a pas chang. Mais je pense aussi que de ce dbat peut sortir une clarification de notre projet national et europen, de nouvelles manires d’envisager l’avenir, de nouvelles ides.

ce dbat, je souhaite que le plus grand nombre de Franais, le plus grand nombre d’entre nous, puisse participer. Ce dbat devra rpondre des questions essentielles qui ont merg ces dernires semaines. C’est pourquoi, avec le Gouvernement, nous avons retenu quatre grands thmes qui couvrent beaucoup des grands enjeux de la nation: la fiscalit et les dpenses publiques, l’organisation de l’Etat et des services publics, la transition cologique, la dmocratie et la citoyennet. Sur chacun de ces thmes, des propositions, des questions sont d’ores et dj exprimes. Je souhaite en formuler quelques unes qui n’puisent pas le dbat mais me semblent au cur de nos interrogations. Le premier sujet porte sur nos impts, nos dpenses et l’action publique. L’impt est au cur de notre solidarit nationale. C’est lui qui finance nos services publics. Il vient rmunrer les professeurs, pompiers, policiers, militaires, magistrats, infirmires et tous les fonctionnaires qui uvrent votre service. Il permet de verser aux plus fragiles des prestations sociales mais aussi de financer certains grands projets d’avenir, notre recherche, notre culture, ou d’entretenir nos infrastructures.

“Quels impts faut il vos yeux baisser en priorit ?”

C’est aussi l’impt qui permet de rgler les intrts de la dette trs importante que notre pays a contracte au fil du temps. Mais l’impt, lorsqu’il est trop lev, prive notre conomie des ressources qui pourraient utilement s’investir dans les entreprises, crant ainsi de l’emploi et de la croissance. Et il prive les travailleurs du fruit de leurs efforts. Nous ne reviendrons pas sur les mesures que nous avons prises pour corriger cela afin d’encourager l’investissement et faire que le travail paie davantage. Elles viennent d’tre votes et commencent peine livrer leurs effets. Le Parlement les valuera de manire transparente et avec le recul indispensable. Nous devons en revanche nous interroger pour aller plus loin.

Comment pourrait on rendre notre fiscalit plus juste et plus efficace? Quels impts faut il vos yeux baisser en priorit? Nous ne pouvons, quoi qu’il en soit, poursuivre les baisses d’impt sans baisser le niveau global de notre dpense publique. Quelles sont les conomies qui vous semblent prioritaires faire? Faut il supprimer certains services publics qui seraient dpasss ou trop chers par rapport leur utilit? A l’inverse, voyez vous des besoins nouveaux de services publics et comment les financer?

Notre modle social est aussi mis en cause. Certains le jugent insuffisant, d’autres trop cher en raison des cotisations qu’ils paient. L’efficacit de la formation comme des services de l’emploi est souvent critique. Le gouvernement a commenc y rpondre, aprs de larges concertations, travers une stratgie pour notre sant, pour lutter contre la pauvret, et pour lutter contre le chmage. Comment mieux organiser notre pacte social? Quels objectifs dfinir en priorit? Le deuxime sujet sur lequel nous devons prendre des dcisions, c’est l’organisation de l’Etat et des collectivits publiques. Les services publics ont un cot, mais ils sont vitaux: cole, police, arme, hpitaux, tribunaux sont indispensables notre cohsion sociale. Y a t il trop d’chelons administratifs ou de niveaux de collectivits locales? Faut il renforcer la dcentralisation et donner plus de pouvoir de dcision et d’action au plus prs des citoyens ? A quels niveaux et pour quels services? Comment voudriez vous que l’Etat soit organis et comment peut il amliorer son action? Faut il revoir le fonctionnement de l’administration et comment? Comment l’Etat et les collectivits locales peuvent ils s’amliorer pour mieux rpondre aux dfis de nos territoires les plus en difficult et que proposez vous?

“Comment finance t on la transition cologique ?”

La transition cologique est le troisime thme, essentiel notre avenir. Je me suis engag sur des objectifs de prservation de la biodiversit et de lutte contre le rchauffement climatique et la pollution de l’air. Aujourd’hui personne ne conteste l’imprieuse ncessit d’agir vite. Plus nous tardons nous remettre en cause, plus ces transformations seront douloureuses. Faire la transition cologique permet de rduire les dpenses contraintes des mnages en carburant, en chauffage, en gestion des dchets et en transports. Mais pour russir cette transition, il faut investir massivement et accompagner nos concitoyens les plus modestes. Une solidarit nationale est ncessaire pour que tous les Franais puissent y parvenir.

Comment finance t on la transition cologique : par l’impt, par les taxes et qui doit tre concern en priorit? Comment rend on les solutions concrtes accessibles tous, par exemple pour remplacer sa vieille chaudire ou sa vieille voiture? Quelles sont les solutions les plus simples et les plus supportables sur un plan financier? Quelles sont les solutions pour se dplacer, se loger, shuto uke se chauffer, se nourrir qui doivent tre conues plutt au niveau local que national? Quelles propositions concrtes feriez vous pour acclrer notre transition environnementale? La question de la biodiversit se pose aussi nous tous. Comment devons nous garantir scientifiquement les choix que nous devons faire cet gard? Comment faire partager ces choix l’chelon europen et international pour que nos producteurs ne soient pas pnaliss par rapport leurs concurrents trangers?

” Faut il rendre le vote obligatoire ?”

Enfin, il est vident que la priode que notre pays traverse montre qu’il nous faut redonner plus de force la dmocratie et la citoyennet. tre citoyen, c’est contribuer dcider de l’avenir du pays par l’lection de reprsentants l’chelon local, national ou europen. Ce systme de reprsentation est le socle de notre Rpublique, mais il doit tre amlior car beaucoup ne se sentent pas reprsents l’issue des lections. Faut il reconnatre le vote blanc? Faut il rendre le vote obligatoire? Quelle est la bonne dose de proportionnelle aux lections lgislativespour une reprsentation plus juste de tous les projets politiques? Faut il, et dans quelles proportions, limiter le nombre de parlementaires ou autres catgories d’lus? Quel rle nos assembles, dont le Snat et le Conseil Economique, Social et Environnemental doivent ils jouer pour reprsenter nos territoires et la socit civile? Faut il les transformer et comment? En outre, une grande dmocratie comme la France doit tre en mesure d’couter plus souvent la voix de ses citoyens. Quelles volutions souhaitez vous pour rendre la participation citoyenne plus active, la dmocratie plus participative? Faut il associer davantage et directement des citoyens non lus, par exemple tirs au sort, la dcision publique? Faut il accrotre le recours aux rfrendums et qui doit en avoir l’initiative?

La citoyennet, c’est aussi le fait de vivre ensemble. Notre pays a toujours su accueillir ceux qui ont fui les guerres, les perscutions et ont cherch refuge sur notre sol: c’est le devoir de l’asile, qui ne saurait tre remis en cause. Notre communaut nationale s’est aussi toujours ouverte ceux qui, ns ailleurs, ont fait le choix de la France, la recherche d’un avenir meilleur: c’est comme cela qu’elle s’est aussi construite. Or, cette tradition est aujourd’hui bouscule par des tensions et des doutes lis l’immigration et aux dfaillances de notre systme d’intgration. Que proposez vous pour amliorer l’intgration dans notre Nation? En matire d’immigration, une fois nos obligations d’asile remplies, souhaitez vous que nous puissions nous fixer des objectifs annuels dfinis par le Parlement? Que proposez vous afin de rpondre ce dfi qui va durer?

” La lacit est est synonyme de libert”

La question de la lacit est toujours en France sujet d’importants dbats. La lacit est la valeur primordiale pour que puissent vivre ensemble, en bonne intelligence et harmonie, des convictions diffrentes, religieuses ou philosophiques. Elle est synonyme de libert parce qu’elle permet chacun de vivre selon ses choix. Comment renforcer les principes de la lacit franaise, dans le rapport entre l’Etat et les religions de notre pays? Comment garantir le respect par tous de la comprhension rciproque et des valeurs intangibles de la Rpublique? Dans les semaines qui viennent, je vous invite dbattre pour rpondre ces questions dterminantes pour l’avenir de notre nation. Je souhaite aussi que vous puissiez, au del de ces sujets que je vous propose, voquer n’importe quel sujet concret dont vous auriez l’impression qu’il pourrait amliorer votre existence au quotidien.

Ce dbat est une initiative indite dont j’ai la ferme volont de tirer toutes les conclusions. Ce n’est ni une lection, ni un rfrendum. C’est votre expression personnelle, correspondant votre histoire, vos opinions, vos priorits, qui est ici requise, sans distinction d’ge ni de condition sociale. C’est, je crois, un grand pas en avant pour notre Rpublique que de consulter ainsi ses citoyens. Pour garantir votre libert de parole, je veux que cette consultation soit organise en toute indpendance, et soit encadre par toutes les garanties de loyaut et de transparence. C’est ainsi que j’entends transformer avec vous les colres en solutions.

Vos propositions permettront donc de btir un nouveau contrat pour la Nation, de structurer l’action du Gouvernement et du Parlement, mais aussi les positions de la France au niveau europen et international. Je vous en rendrai compte directement dans le mois qui suivra la fin du dbat. Franaises, Franais, je souhaite que le plus grand nombre d’entre vous puisse participer ce grand dbat afin de faire uvre utile pour l’avenir de notre pays.
